40% of Teacher Posts are Vacant in IIT

IIT Recruitment 2022 Vacancy Details – According to RTI, about 40% vacancies for teachers posts have been created in 23 IITs across the country. According to data provided by the Ministry of Education in the Lok Sabha to a question raised by Congress member Shashi Tharoor. There are total 4370 teacher posts vacant in IITs in India. There is a demand for filling these vacancies as soon as possible. The data once again highlighted the poor representation of faculty from reserved categories. Only 12% of the 6,511 teaching staff are from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

IIT Vacancy 2022 Details

Tharoor’s question sought information on vacancies, faculty-student ratios and the measures being undertaken to fill the vacancies.

• While the response from the education ministry detailed that a recruitment drive was underway to fill these vacancies, particularly those for faculty from reserved Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backwards Classes (OBC) categories and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the data provided by the ministry showed that while 6,511 teachers are currently working at the IITs, 4,370 faculty posts are currently vacant.
• According to the report, among the older, larger IITs, 57.2% posts are vacant in IIT Dhanbad, 53.4% are vacant in IIT Kharagpur while only 9.4% are vacant in IIT Delhi.
• Moreover, the data showed that only 12% of the 6,511 teachers belong to these reserved categories. This is despite the government’s reservation policy which requires 7.5% of teaching positions be reserved for people from SCs, 10% for EWS, 15% for STs and 27% for OBCs. This would bring the total of faculty members from reserve categories, ideally, to 59.5%.
• The worst IIT with respect to representation of reserved classes in faculty was IIT Bombay, which has only 3.8% of its faculty from reserved categories. IIT Delhi, despite having low vacancies, is also poor in this regard, having only 6.5% reserved-category faculty.
